Relationship between surface tension of upper airway lining liquid and upper airway collapsibility during sleep in obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome.
Lowering surface tension (gamma) of upper airway lining liquid (UAL) reduces upper airway opening (anesthetized humans) and closing (anesthetized rabbits) pressures. We now hypothesize that in sleeping obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) patients lowering gamma of UAL will enhance upper airway stability and decrease the severity of sleep-disordered breathing. Nine OSAHS patients [...
متن کاملAnesthesia, sleep, and upper airway collapsibility.
Anesthesia and sleep both predispose to upper airway obstruction through state-induced reductions in pharyngeal dilator muscle activation and lung volume. The tendencies are related in patients with obstructive sleep apnea commonly presenting with difficulties in airway management in the perioperative period. This is a period of great potential vulnerability for such patients because of comprom...
متن کاملUpper-airway resistance syndrome.
Upper-airway resistance syndrome (UARS) was first recognized in children in 1982 (Guilleminault et al., 1982). The term UARS, however, was not used until adult cases were reported in 1993 (Guilleminault et al., 1993). The description of UARS brought the attention of clinicians to a group of patients that was left undiagnosed and untreated despite severe impairment. The authors indicated that th...
متن کاملAging increases upper airway collapsibility in Fischer 344 rats.
The upper airway muscles play an important role in maintaining upper airway collapsibility, and the incidence of sleep-disordered breathing increases with age. We hypothesize that the increase in airway collapsibility with increasing age can be linked to changes in upper airway muscle mechanics and structure. Eight young (Y: 6 mo) and eight old (O: 30 mo) Fischer 344 rats were anesthetized and ...
متن کاملSigns of Upper Airway Collapsibility in Snoring Sounds
We have shown that snoring fundamental frequency (F0) contours have an oscillating pattern in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as compared to the relatively smoother pattern in simple snorers. This points to the underlying upper airway instability and collapsibility in OSA. The 2 patterns were classified by 75% accuracy.
